If you are totally disabled at the time of separation (unable to work), you can apply for the SGLI Disability Extension, which provides free coverage for up to two years from the date of separation. While you do not need to apply for SGLI coverage, an extension of SGLI due to total disability is not automatic. You must apply to the Office of Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (OSGLI) for the extension. At the end of the extension period, you automatically become eligible for VGLI, subject to premium payments.
You are eligible for the SGLI Disability Extension if you are totally disabled at time of discharge. To be considered totally disabled, you must have a disability that prevents you from being gainfully employed, OR have one of the following conditions, regardless of your employment status:
There is no cost to you once approved for the SGLI Disability Extension.
To receive SGLI Disability Extension, you must complete and submit SGLV 8715, Application for the Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) Disability Extension.
