GI Bill 80th Anniversary Event at the National Press Club

On June 22, 2024, the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) will celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the original GI Bill and VA Home Loan Guaranty programs, created by the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944. This critical law provided a wide range of benefits for Veterans returning from World War II, including low-cost home loans, education, and vocational training. The original GI Bill was heralded as a success and major contributor to America's stock of human capital that sped long-term economic growth across the nation. Subsequent legislation expanded and extended similar benefits to future generations, including Veterans of the Korean War, Vietnam Veterans, and those serving during peacetime. Passage of the Post-9/11 GI Bill provided this important benefit to Veterans who served after September 11, 2011. Since its inception, VA has also guaranteed more than 28 million home loans.  VA will celebrate the law and the developments that are heralded as the foundation of the American middle class.
