VA’s Boston Regional Benefit Office (RO) administers a variety of services, including Compensation, Education, Insurance, Loan Guaranty, Pension, and Veteran Readiness and Employment for Veterans, Servicemembers, their families and survivors in Massachusetts. We offer the following additional services:
- Counseling about eligibility for VA benefits and how to apply
- Information about VA health care and memorial benefits
- Outreach to Veterans, including those who are homeless or at risk for homelessness and older, minority, and women Veterans

Working with the U.S. Department of Defense on Integrated Disability Evaluation System
The Boston RO is actively engaged in the Integrated Disability Evaluation System (IDES), a joint program with the Department of Defense (DOD) to improve the disability rating process. The program aims to create a single disability exam conducted to VA standards and used by both VA and DOD, develop a single disability rating completed by VA that is binding on both departments, and provide payments of VA benefits within 30 days of a Servicemember’s separation from service. Boston has an operational site at Hanscom Air Force Base, which serves about 10 Servicemembers per month. Our average IDES processing timeliness for both Reserve and active duty Servicemembers is 0.8 days for referrals, 8.6 days for claims development, and 30 days for medical evaluations.
