Attorney and Agent Fees Paid by VA
Understanding Attorney and Agent Fees in VA Claims
Veterans have several options for getting help with their VA disability claims. They can:
- File a claim on their own
- Work with a free Veterans Service Organization (VSO)
- Choose a paid, VA-accredited attorney or agent
By law, VA may withhold a portion of a Veteran’s back pay to pay these representatives
directly—but only under strict conditions. The representative must be VA-accredited, a valid
fee agreement must be in place, and fees are generally limited to 20%.
The key metrics listed below show monthly and calendar year-to-date totals. These totals do not
include payments Veterans make directly to attorneys, which are not administered by VA.
Please note, totals for prior months may change due to payments being authorized in one month
and disbursed in the next.
