18. Hospitalization due to traumatic brain injury

A member will be considered eligible for a TSGLI benefit for hospitalization due to traumatic brain injury if the member has been hospitalized for 15 consecutive days* as a result of a traumatic brain injury.

* The count of consecutive hospitalization days begins when the injured member is transported to the hospital, includes the day of admission, continues through subsequent transfers from one hospital to another, and includes the day of discharge.

Definition of a Hospital — an inpatient facility accredited as a hospital under the Hospital Accreditation Program of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. This includes Combat Support Hospitals, Air Force Theater Hospitals and Navy Hospital Ships.

Note: Hospital does not include a nursing home. Neither does it include an institution, or part of one, which: (1) is used mainly as a place for convalescence, rest, nursing care or for the aged; or (2) furnishes mainly homelike or Custodial Care, or training in the routines of daily living; or (3) is for residential or domiciliary living; or (4) is mainly a school.
