TSGLI Loss Standards

10. Amputation of Fingers

When a member loses four fingers on the same hand or the member loses one thumb, the member is eligible for a TSGLI benefit for amputation of fingers if the member meets the following standard:


If the member suffers... OR the member suffers...

Amputation of four fingers on the same hand (not including the thumb) at or above* the metacarpophalangeal joint

Amputation of thumb at or above* the metacarpophalangeal joint.

* The words “at or above” in the standard refers to the loss being closer to the body.

MCP = MetaCarpoPhalangeal joint; between the Metacarpal and Proximal Phalanges

IP = InterPhalangeal joint; between the Proximal Phalanges and Distal Phalanges (only on thumb)

PIP = Proximal InterPhalangeal joint; between Proximal Phalanges and Intermediate Phalanges

DIP = Distal InterPhalangeal joint; between Intermediate Phalanges and Distal Phalanges (all fingers other than thumb)
