Protect yourself from phishing/scams

Fraudsters will sometimes misrepresent themselves as federal agencies, including the Department of Veterans Affairs Insurance Center.

To Help Protect Yourself:

  • Do not share personal or financial information with unverified callers.
  • Check the validity of the call by disconnecting and calling our official toll-free number: 1-800-669-8477.

Insurance Employees Will Never:

  • Pressure you to make an immediate payment or provide personal details.
  • Ask you to verify passwords.
  • Ask for, or accept, your credit card information.
  • Ask for your banking information*.
  • Get angry or upset with you.
  • Try to sell you an insurance policy.
  • Call you after 6:00pm Eastern Standard Time (EST).

*Insurance Employees may need to confirm or verify banking information. They should explain the reason why clarification is needed, and in some cases, this may require the Veteran or beneficiary to provide banking information.

Example: “Hi this is Jen Smith calling from the Department of Veterans Affairs Insurance Center, we recently received your form and/or application, we are unable to read the last two digits of your account number, it looks like ‘2-4’, can you verify if that is correct?”

Insurance Employees Will Always:

  • Identify themselves, “Hi this is Jen Smith calling from the Department of Veterans Affairs Insurance Center.” Or “Hi this is Jen Smith calling from the VA Insurance Center.”
  • Explain the reason for the call.
  • Ask to confirm your identifiable information or policy information after they first identify themselves.

Important Things to Remember:

  • If you receive a call outside of business hours from someone claiming to be from the VA Insurance Center, do not give out any personal or financial information.
  • We do not currently accept credit card payments over the phone; all payments must be paid via official VA Insurance Center payment channels only:

  • We do not have third-party affiliates, other than Prudential Insurance Company of America, who administers the Veterans Group Life Insurance program, through their Office of Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance.
  • VA Insurance Center phone calls will always come from our official number: 1-800-669-8477 or 215-842-2000.
  • The caller ID will display Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • You can always ask the caller to provide their full name, organization, and callback number.
  • You can call the VA Insurance Call Center directly using the phone number provided on your VA Insurance correspondence.
  • When calling the VA Insurance Center, you will hear “Thank you for calling the VA Insurance Center”
  • If you ever receive a suspicious call claiming to be the VA Insurance Center, hang up immediately, do not give out any information, and contact us directly.
  • Make note of any information you receive from the caller to report to us.
  • If you do give out personal or financial information, report the matter to other appropriate law enforcement authorities such as local law enforcement, the State’s Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Branch, to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), or all the above.
