Life Insurance

How does my health affect my ability to get life insurance?

Age and health are the two most important factors life insurance companies use to determine if you are insurable.  Chronic health conditions such as heart failure, history of cancer, and kidney disease can affect your ability to get affordable life insurance.

When you apply for coverage with a private insurance company, they use an underwriting process that includes health questions and possibly a medical exam.  They use this information combined with your age and the length and amount of coverage you want to determine if you are insurable, and at what cost.

VA’s programs offer timeframes for applying without proof of good health, which is an important benefit if you have any health conditions that may make if difficult to get affordable coverage from a private insurance company.
